History
Government Polytechnic Darbhanga was established in the year 1959, with a vision to spread technical education and skilled manpower across the Mithila region and beyond. As one of the earlier polytechnic institutions set up in the state of Bihar, it has played a foundational role in shaping generations of diploma engineers who have gone on to serve in public and private sector industries, government departments, and entrepreneurial ventures across the country.
Functioning under the Department of Science, Technology and Technical Education, Government of Bihar, the institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and is affiliated to the State Board of Technical Education (SBTE), Bihar, which conducts the semester examinations and issues diploma certificates. Over more than six decades, the institute has built a strong academic legacy rooted in discipline, technical rigour, and practical training.
The institute currently offers three-year diploma programmes across five major engineering disciplines — Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering. Admission to these programmes is conducted through the Diploma Certificate Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE), held by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB).
From its early years as a modest technical training centre to its present-day identity as a well-established government polytechnic serving North Bihar, the institute has consistently adapted its facilities, faculty strength, and academic outlook to keep pace with the evolving demands of the engineering profession — while staying rooted in its founding purpose: making quality technical education accessible to the youth of the region
